Corset Talk

Share

On Wednesday May 7th I'm doing a history of corsets talk as part of the Montana Wednesday Evenings lecture series at the Christchurch Art Gallery, in conjunction with the "Morris & Co: The World of William Morris" exhibition. Details here.

The talk is entitled (in a moment of whimsy, I'm afraid!) "When the Corset Grew Up: A Journey from Utilitarian Undergarment to Object of Fantasy to Warrior Princess Armour." There will be corsets, lots of corsets! Many illustrations! And live models! Should be fun. :-)

Pictures from the 3rd Annual Gothic Punk Exhibition can now be viewed here. It was a great exhibition to be involved with - I really enjoyed having a "theme" to produce works for. All kudos to artamatikrose for a brilliantly organised and professional event.

The corsets which were on display at Parklands Library are this week at Linwood Library and next week at Fendalton Library.

October 1st, 2007

The corset exhibition closed on Saturday, so there's a few pics under the cut for the record. It got lots of really positive comments, which was great, and seems to have generated some potential business. It was really interesting to display the corsets in that context (a community library). People generally seemed to see them much more as artworks than as clothing (a similar reaction to the one I got at The Arts Centre exhibition), although there were some enquiries from people who wanted corsets or crinolines to wear. Most thought it was great to see the library used as a display space. Only one person thought the exhibition was inappropriate for the space (her comment was "What's with the disturbing artworks? This is a library!" Honestly, where do you start when trying to address a comment like that?) and I think from her dress she was a Christian fundamentalist of some sort. Oh well, can't win 'em all... :-)

I've currently got an exhibition of corsets at Parklands Library (Queenspark Drive, Parklands, Christchurch) as a part of Christchurch City Libraries' Fashion Month. If you're in Christchurch between now and the 29th of this month feel free to pootle out and have a look - it's a pleasant wee place with a lovely cafe. :-) Here's the poster:

And here's the article on the CCL website. (With a little bit of online fame for the participants in my bit of the Gothic Masquerade Ball fashion show.) :-)

I'll take some pictures in the next couple of days.

This is a small promo for a new site created by a friend of mine. If you're a New Zealand-based creative artsy/craftsy type looking for somewhere online to market your wares, this could be for you.

The site is:

http://www.felt.co.nz

Felt is a New Zealand online marketplace for indie artists/craftspeople. If you're familiar with Etsy, it's a similar thing but for a New Zealand market. If you haven't encountered that one, think of it as kind-of like Trademe, but instead of it being an auction-based sales system, you get to set the price and the listing stays up until the item is sold. Like Trademe, there is a listing fee and a small percentage taken on point of sale. Members can set up a profile and their own "shop" (with description of who they are and what they do) for free. As you can see if you look at it, it's a very new startup with a small (but growing!) number of listings so far, but I'm trying to help her spread the word as I think it's a great idea. (I also really like her site design - it looks really classy.)

If you know anyone who might be interested, please spread the word! Thank you!
